I originally built Notebook.ai to be a powerful worldbuilding tool that would stand on its own while also being able to integrate state-of-the-art AI features for authors and other creatives — when the tech was finally ready.

Well, it’s finally ready.

Meet Basil, Visualizer of Ideas

Whether you’re creating a rich, sprawling world or a tight-knit community environment, it can be hard to visualize each character, location, and item in your world. Notebook.ai is great for tracking all the little details, but even they can get lost when you’re visualizing complex worlds or stories.

Our new visualizer feature is a great way to reshape all those little details into a more visual form for you to reference while building your fictional world: images.

To start generating images for any of your Notebook.ai pages, simply click “Image Generation” in that page’s menu.

The “Image Generation” tool is available for most page types already, but more are coming soon!

You’re in charge

By default, Basil will automatically compile your page’s existing answers to anything relevant to a visualization into a single form for you to preview, and Basil will also adjust the importance of each field automatically to result in the best-quality image.

To generate an image, simply select the style you want to generate it in — everything else is automatically selected for you and ready to go!

Basil uses your existing page answers to generate images in the style you choose.

If you want even more control over the visualizations, you can also click “Customize per-field importance” at any time to adjust the importance sliders for each field manually, letting you choose which answers have more or less prominence in your final images.

Saving your images

Like everything else on Notebook.ai, your generated images are private by default and only accessible to you. The visualization page has its own queue of your most recent generations for each character, but you can also save your favorites directly to that character’s existing image gallery at any time by clicking “Save” on any generated image.

Saved images inherit the privacy setting of the page they’re saved to. Saving images to a private page will keep the images private; however, if you choose to make a character public, any images added to their gallery will be public as well.

Visualize more than just characters

Of course, characters aren’t the only things we want to visualize and get inspired by when creating rich, fantastical worlds!

Right now, you can generate visualizations of your fictional characters, locations, items, creatures, floras, foods, planets, landmarks, and towns — with more of Notebook.ai’s worldbuilding pages being enabled soon.

Visualize your world’s characters, locations, items, creatures, floras, foods, planets, landmarks, towns, and more on Notebook.ai.

Start visualizing today

This feature is available to all users to start visualizing with right now. Users with a Premium subscription on Notebook.ai are now able to generate an unlimited number of images of their worldbuilding pages, while users on our free-forever accounts will be able to generate 100 images for free.

Visualize responsibly with Ethical AI

With this first major AI release, I want to call special attention to Notebook.ai’s Commitment to Ethical AI, which has informed my development of this feature and will continue to guide development for all AI-powered features in the future. I’ve been working with creatives and experts to ensure any AI feature added to Notebook.ai is done so as ethically and responsibly as possible, and I intend to show the rest of the AI community that you can have high-quality, useful features without resorting to unethical data collection.

In addition to starting with a more limited, open-source SD2.1 model that removes the ability to generate art in any specific artist’s style, I’ve also implemented the following design decisions meant to align Basil with responsible use:

  • No user data from Notebook.ai has been used to train any AI models; this includes both text written and images uploaded to the site.
  • I’ve further fine-tuned the SD2.1 model on public domain photography and images, and use embeddings of additional public domain and opt-in images to ensure the model’s most relevant training data draws upon images that respect copyright and artist intentions.
  • Notebook.ai has joined the Content Authenticity Initiative to help promote the adoption of open standards, content authenticity, and transparent data provenance. All of our generated images include an invisible watermark that clearly denotes that they are AI-generated and includes all of the settings and parameters used to generate them.
  • All of our image generations use high-temperature and high-CFG settings, which result in a significantly larger divergence away from any individual piece of training data. While this means low-quality images are far more likely on average, it also results in a much broader spectrum of possibilities that can stray far away from anything the AI has previously seen. This high variance in both content and quality also positions Basil to generate a wide variety of images for inspiration, rather than being used to replace specific image commissions from artists.
  • All of my personal testing during development was using a diverse cast of characters from all backgrounds, body types, ages, and sexualities. I’ve also added a public stats dashboard that anyone can view to see a breakdown of Basil’s performance and I plan on including breakdowns per race, gender, and other character traits soon to ensure that any inherent AI biases in quality are accurately reported and addressed.

I’m also soliciting any and all feedback on our published AI guidelines. If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me directly at andrew@indentlabs.com. Although AI as a whole is moving fast, I want to take my time and do things right, and set an example to the rest of the industry that you can have powerful, useful features and responsible AI practices.

Head on over to Notebook.ai to start building your own fictional world, now with visualizations. You can access the new image generation features at this link, or by clicking “Image Generation” when viewing any page.

Happy worldbuilding!
